The United States’Embassy, AXIAN Foundation and Saint Gabriel Mizara association have launched a partnership that will see the opening of an American Corner in Mahajunga

THE AMERICAN CORNER, A CULTURAL CENTRE AIMING TO PROMOTE EDUCATION

The American Corner initiative has been a cornerstone of the US State Department’s social contributions abroad since the year 2000. Tasked with educating communities across the world on America’s economy, history and culture, there are now close to 400 American Corners in operation across over 60 countries. These Corners organize English classes, conferences and exhibitions, amongst others.

This new American Corner is located in the city of Mahajunga, in the Telma Building at the Wello Centre. The Saint Gabriel Mizara association will run the center while the AXIAN Foundation and American Embassy will provide administrative and technical support. The latter will also provide various resources to the local community and businesses, including a library as well as internet access to various digital resources—all of which will be available in the American Corner—and intends to organise new events and activities.

THE AXIAN FOUNDATION, LOCALLY ENABLING A GLOBAL INITIATIVE

The technical support that the AXIAN Foundation will bring to Mahajunga’s American Corner allows them to launch initiatives that promote learning and education in Madagascar. This new place allows the country’s fourth-largest city to discover America’s rich culture and history via the book and media libraries and digital resources via internet.

As stated, the Saint Gabriel Mizara association will manage the Corner’s day-to-day operations, as its role in Madagascar’s American-Corner initiative synergizes strongly with its mandate to help underprivileged families across the country. As part of their role, they also will organise trainings, forums, language classes, presentations and exhibitions for the public.

The AXIAN Foundation is ready to do its part in this significant partnership, and will also bring its support to the opening of other American Corners in Madagascar as well as the Comoros.
